Day 17 Lighting Project The Headshot

What is the difference between a headshot and a portrait? I think that with my project today I went somewhere in between the two. I think I would use the edited version as a business headshot but I also took others on a plain white background that I will post later. Let’s face it some people just don’t like post processing whatsoever. I get it. It is a matter of personal preference. Personally I think post-processing is just part of the creative process. In this one I post-processed a little more than usual. I used frequency separation for the skin, I liquified the face to make it slightly thinner, I brightened the eyes a tad, applied just a hint of colour grading and dropped in a textured background. I used a four light setup as seen below. I will be posting more of my thoughts on headshot and portrait photography in the near future.

Four Light Setup

Now I know some people will not like the catchlights in the eyes. Some just want that one catchlight. But to get fairly even lighting across the face this setup seems to work best. Of course there are those also who do not like even lighting. They want shadows. That is all part of the discussion.

Which do you prefer? Let me know in the comments and be sure to subscribe for updates.
